No doubt this is true within the AI community, but if you look on Reddit, Bluesky etc., the overwhelming consensus "smart person view" is that the whole story must be fake. The wider public is not just unprepared for what's coming, but actively contemptuous of anything that might prepare them.
I'm surprised by the expressions of gratitude to OpenAI too. I guess they are what you do with toddlers to reinforce good behaviour. Speaks volumes about the expectations people have of them.

Read his statements, all the words are there: "If we could", "would likely" - does this sound like an answer? "Lord, make me prudent, but not yet"?
It's incredibly convenient to push the responsibility onto "we", who "could". An external omnipotent entity who just makes our troubles go away. But until Mom appears, keep doing what you're doing though, the sweet equity needs to vest at some point.

I get how someone might desire a pause but keep working at an AI org because they expect to do more good being there, helping to align it. I get how a whole company might desire a pause but think they'd simply be left behind, lose their customers, and everyone else would keep barrelling on anyway.
But it's hard to accurately calculate the real consequences of these kinds of decisions. And if everyone thinks this way then things continue to escalate and nothing changes. And always there is the economic incentive that pushes them to decide to keep going.
I wish there was more real action from the inside. In times of uncertainty one can always fall back on basic principles. If you think AI is developing too fast, stop working on it. Now you're no longer contributing. If an AI company wants a pause, pause. Now you're making it safer. Maybe others will even follow suit, and they'll look irresponsible if they don't.
Sometimes all it takes is someone setting a good example. Let he who chooses not to sin put his stone down first.
